It is a beach that is ideal for beach-combing, even though the area is very tidal. When the tide is out, it’s a stoney beach. You can see a beach in winter. During full moon and new moon high tides, the causeway may be covered in water, turning Mersea into a proper island. If you absolutely must get across, you should be able to do so for about an hour either side of the high tide time. If it is over 5m, allow an extra 30 minutes. Between 12 and 3.30 is when the biggest tides happen. You will be fine to cross outside of these times.
Can you get stuck on Mersea Island?
We recommend allowing up to an hour and a half either side of the tide to get on or off the island. Not only is the salt water bad for your vehicle, it is also a danger to life when you attempt to cross the Strood.
Is East or West Mersea better?
West Mersea is a small fishing town with a selection of shops, restaurants and pubs. There are wild natural beaches and large openspaces in the east.
Is Mersea Island safe?
West Mersea is connected to the mainland by a causeway. The beach is backed by beach huts and grassland. The water is safe to swim in, however there are spikes in the amount ofbacteriafound on some days.
Does Mersea Island have a train station?
You can catch a train from London Street to the station. A taxi ride to the island is only a few minutes away from the town station.
Can you stay on Mersea Island?
All budgets and tastes can be accommodated on Mersea Island. Caravans and tents are great for families with three or more people. The price of the stay may include entertainment and activities.
