The easiest way to get to Gometra is to take the ferry from Oban to Craignure on the west coast of Scotland. It is easy to get to the Ferry port without getting wet as the station at Oban discharges passengers close to the Ferry port. The population of the islands of Ulva and Gometra was reduced to around 100 in the late 1800s due to potato famines and clearances. Nowadays the islands are inhabited by around 20 people, as the population declined further.
