South Walney nature reserve is open from 10am to 5pm in the winter. The reserve gate is lockedafter closing time. This walk will take you on a 4 mile walk around Walney Island and you can extend it to 6.8 miles. The walk will take between 2 and 2 1/2 hours. Sandy Gap is in the north and Thorney Nook is in the south. The best place to see the seals in the water is from the path walking down towards Pier Hide, from Pier Hide itself at high tide, and from the seaward hides of Groyne Hide and Sea Hide.
Can you wild camp on Walney Island?
The nature reserve is not far from the South End caravan and motorhome site. This location has great views over Piel Channel and farmland. There are several wild camping spots for camper vans on the road up tothe nature reserve.
Are dogs allowed on Walney Island?
Dogs on lead are advised to go into the Nature Reserve at the North tip or South tip of the beach.
